We are delighted Ruth Mazarura from Zimbabwe has accepted our scholarship offer to attend the IAHSA/ACSA conference, in Perth, 30 August – 3 September.
Ms Mazarura has a BSc Degree in HIV and AIDS Management and Community Development, is a trained midwife and a Registered General Nurse. She is currently working as a health officer with an organisation that supports government, local organisations, and communities to mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) and their households.
Previous positions include project manager for Better Health for Older Persons in Africa where she trained health professionals and community based care givers (CHBC) in geriatric and palliative care; the aim was to improve access to care and health for older people.
Ms Mazarura believes older people are misunderstood in Zimbabwe and feels there is the need to educate the community about ageing. In her current position she wishes to lobby for increased support for older people who are caring for OVC, a prevalent situation in Zimbabwe.
