Intergenerational activities
By bringing the generations together, we are encouraging mutual respect and understanding. Discover some of the intergenerational projects we have run and are supporting.
Intergenerational story telling project
With the aim of connecting all ages across the Commonwealth, challenging ageism and recording stories for generations to come, we invited young people living in Commonwealth countries to spend time with an older person and write that person’s life story.
Run in the form of a competition, the authors were also asked to write about their experience of spending time with that older person; many found it a profound experience, and attitudes, on both sides, were changed.
The stories have been collated into a unique collation of experiences.
Girl Effect TEGA intergenerational video
While there are more young people in The Commonwealth, old people are the fasted growing age group, and their experience is often mis-represented and not well understood.
Created in partnership with Girl Effect’s TEGA (Technology Enabled Girls Ambassadors) in Rwanda, this video aimed to understand the challenges faced by older women and how intergenerational dialogue can foster support within communities and across generations.
Save Elders Tanzania
We supported Sarah Lambada to attend our inaugural Elders Form in 2018. Sarah is the Director of Youimpact Company Ltd and this was her first time in the UK.
In 2023, we also supported Sarah to attend the The Duke of Edinburgh’s Commonwealth Study Conference (CSC), held in Canada, 3-18 June 2023.
Under the Save Elders Tanzania banner, this remarkable young woman has mobilised a team of young volunteers to regularly actively assist in helping older people.
Using social media they highlight the issues and challenges older people face and how small actions can make a real difference to an older person’s life.
CommonAge Youth Chapter: Supporting young leaders in the sector
Headed up by Rianna Patterson our Youth Chapter is a community of dynamic young people, aged between 18-35, who are actively engaged with older people across Commonwealth countries.
The aim of this Chapter is to support young leaders and create more opportunities for the generations to come together.
In 2016, at just 18 years old, Rianna founded the Dominica Dementia Foundation, in memory of her grandfather who passed away with dementia. This Foundation is a youth-led dementia charity that supports families and care homes.
