Today, 1 October is International Day of Older Persons.
Growing older does not diminish a person’s inherent dignity and fundamental rights. This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions‘.
Almost 700 million people are now over the age of 60.
By 2050, 2 billion people, over 20 per cent of the world’s population will be 60 or older.
- In the majority of Commonwealth countries, the absolute size of older population will increase by at least 100% over the next 25 years. These are mostly low- and middle- income countries.
- In the slowest ageing countries in the Commonwealth – those with the smallest projected change in population share of older people – where continuing high fertility acts as a brake on population ageing, the number of older people is still set to grow very rapidly. Most of these slow ageing countries are in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Pacific Islands. Pakistan is the only country outside these two regions where children are expected to outnumber older people until at least 2095.
- The fastest ageing countries in the Commonwealth are mostly in the Caribbean and Asia, where fertility rates have been falling quite sharply and substantial gains have been made in life expectancy at birth. Some of these countries have to consider the prospect of ‘growing old before they grow rich’.
Care Practice Essentials is primarily designed to assist in providing care for the elderly whether in an aged care setting or at home to understand the basics and provide some level of guidance in providing quality and safe care to the elderly.
Covering 21 topics such as personal care, manual handling, medication and nutrition, the manual is suitable for individuals and small organisations looking for a cost-effective way of accessing quality guidelines. It is available to any organisation or individual working or residing within a Commonwealth Country.
