We are pleased to announce we are launching our Dementia in the Commonwealth report on Friday, 6 September 2024 at the International Dementia Conference, Sydney, Australia.

Believed to be the first report on dementia focussing on Commonwealth countries, this pivotal publication delves into the current state of dementia care and support; it highlights disparities and challenges, best practices, and the urgent need for action to improve the lives of those living with dementia.

With 2.5billion people across the 56 nations of the Commonwealth, it makes up over 33 per cent of the global population. Commonwealth countries are among the world’s biggest, smallest, richest and poorest countries; there are 21 Commonwealth countries in Africa, 8 in Asia, 13 in Caribbean and Americas, 3 in Europe, 11 in Pacific.

A new case of dementia arises somewhere in the world every 3 seconds according to Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), and there are currently estimated to be over 55 million people worldwide living with dementia. This number is set to rise to 139 million by 2050, with the greatest increases in low- and middle-income countries.

The report, which involved extensive research and collaboration with experts, people living with dementia, healthcare providers, and carers across the Commonwealth, includes:

  • the progress made towards the development of National Dementia Plans (NDP) or strategies in Commonwealth countries
  • showcases successful models of care from across the Commonwealth that can serve as templates for improvement
  • advocates for stronger policies that prioritise dementia care, support for caregivers, and a commitment to research and innovation
  • encourages local communities to foster supportive environments for people living with dementia, their families and care givers.
